Students Enjoy Half Term Agricultural Taster Day & Industry Visit

10 students from across Somerset enjoyed a taster day organised by Somerset’s Dairy Careers Project at Bridgwater College- Cannington Centre on Wednesday 19th February.

The day had great support from the industry with a talk from Charlie King nutritionist, practical activity testing dairy products in the labs, milking, tractor driving and a talk from Graham Ragg Agronomist from Mole Valley Farmers. The day highlighted a few of the jobs that are available in the industry and gave the students a chance to talk to industry representatives.

On Friday 21st February, 15 students got a chance to look around the Muller-Wiseman Processing Plant at Junction 24 following the process through from farm to fridge. The tour of the processing plant was hosted by June Ricketts Farm Services Manager, who explained the process from the milk coming in by tanker from the farms through the pasteurisation process and how it is bottled and leaves the factory- all within maximum of 12 hours.

Laura Milverton Dairy Careers Project coordinator said “It is essential that young people are told about the career opportunities that are available in the dairy industry and taster days like this one will help young people to view the industry as an attractive career prospect”.

The day was enjoyed by all and Somerset’s Dairy Careers Project is planning similar events for the future.
